New toys - Nikon D300

26

Feb

I like my toys as much as the next person, but I don't normally get that excited over cameras. Being outside making photographs is so much more interesting! But I'm strangely excited about the Nikon D300 which I ordered yesterday. The reason for buying is that I need a backup body and a decent grab shot camera, rather than the Panasonic Lumix LX2 that I currently use for grab shots. The Panasonic is creatively very stimulating with full control and a choice of aspect ratios, but the image quality, even from RAW, is not quite good enough for me to want to include any prints from it in my portfolio. The D300 is light and compact, compared to my D2X, and has been getting good reviews. I almost laughed out loud when I read the respected Scott Kelby's review. He reckoned the screen was the reason to get one! (Obviously image quality, ease of use in the field and robustness to the pro life are also important.) Then I checked out a D300 in the flesh. The screen is amazing, like looking at the images on my Mac monitor. Anyway, enough lusting, a full review will follow soon. (Yes, I know, yet another D300 review!). Oh, and I also ordered the sharp and compact Sigma 30mm f/1.4 prime as the main lens to keep on this body.
