The square bump on the rocky peninsula is the Ness of Burgi Iron Age blockhouse. Built approximately 2000 years ago the inhabitants would have hard a hard life living off seabirds, eggs, fish and seals.

The foreground shows typical Shetland geology, that is, a hotch potch of rock. Granite, sandstone, gneiss, limestone, gabbro and many others can be found in close proximity to each other. This mix occurred when the continents of Gondwanland and Laurentia collided to form the Caledonian mountain belt which stretched from North America, through Greenland, Ireland, and Scotland to finish in Scandanavia.

Nikon D2X, 12-24mm lens @ 18mm, 1/15s at f/16 ISO100, Lee 0.6ND hard grad filter.
