High up above Borrowdale, so early in the morning, even the dog has bags under her bleary eyes, we scramble through wild trees and rocky gorges to reach the summit. Not a path in sight, unlike so many hills in the Lake District, we find our own way, enjoying unspoilt beauty. No one comes this way!

I’m going to hang this on the wall!, Derwentwater, Borrowdale, Lake District, Cumbria, England
Our memories of the same event can be very different. For the young couple enjoying champagne and a picnic as the sun went down on Derwentwater, it was about being together on holiday. One of their photographs, of the many they were taking, was going to go onto canvas in their new home, a reminder of a great trip away together. For the solitary landscape photographer, no hand to hold, but other experiences. A few hours earlier I had been climbing the waterfall at the Lodore Falls. No, not the path up the side, I was climbing the boulders of the falls, admiring the mossy walls and the water carved funnels. And at conversation distance, what comes past, but a large sleek otter! Ignoring me, it carries on climbing the falls past me. What a treat. What a highlight to any day. And who knows, maybe this photograph will end up on someone’s wall too.

Another take on this classic view down Derwentwater. Initially I liked the cloud reflections, but the whole look is a bit too artificial and I prefer the mood of the darker view later in the evening. More romantic!

Conditions change so fast on Shetland. A cluster of tiny islands taking the full force and weather of the Atlantic. The sky changes totally within minutes. The 200m cliffs poking out the Atlantic seem to divert the clouds, sometimes. You need to be very organised, previsualised and patient. Very patient (with a bagful of dry cloths for drying lenses.)

I made a series of photographs of this scene in this week, the week that my father in law, Ian Cochrane Millar died. I’ll never forget the contrast of the sublime happiness of coming back from a morning in the landscape to that extreme sadness. I’ll never forget the guilt that I felt that I wasn’t there for my wife or her mum when the phone call came. We used this photograph on the order of service for his funeral, it seems all to apt for many reasons, but mainly just for that tiny hint of sun on the clouds whilst all around is dark.

(Incidentally, the rocks on the right are Fitful Head and this is the bay where the Braer ran ashore in 1993.)

I spent one week exploring this tiny peninsula, a mile long and maybe a hundred meters wide. The character of geology, sea, flora, fauna and light was different in each tiny little bit - almost a macrocosm for the rest of Shetland. The iron age blockhouse can be seen as a rounded hump on the right side of the horizon - 2000years ago brought other travellers to this area too.

Many people think that it is the wind that has resulted in the lack of trees on Shetland, but a change in the climate in the 18th century was the true cause. However, the high winds are the bane of the landscape photographer. That and the ever present moisture in the air. Shetland - beautiful, but challenging.

I forgot how good it was to be alive

With the wrens and the finches twittering in the cliffs above that I had just scrambled down from crumbly ledge to sharp little handholds

A flotilla of diving cormorants floats past me

Sitting on a 100 ton boulder

As the next giant waves breaks feet away

A wave that could crush or grind me to paste

It disappears under my boulder shaking it and drenching me in spray

Now I am alive.

The bed of dolerite that the castle sits on has been twisted and compressed by the weight of the castle fighting the earths rotation. the wall struggles to keep up and the poor old sea routs in terror.
Many people visit Bamburgh to walk along the miles of golden beaches and enjoy the fresh, fresh air. The tide and the wind create many ripples in the sand. Add some morning light and I was happy.

I’ve always wanted to try this milky sea effect from a really, really long exposure during the night. It turned out to be a really scary experience. The tide had just turned and was going out, but the waves were still crashing over the rocks, and me! The rock was really slippery and it was really dark so I couldn’t see a thing. Great combination for a scary trip back to dry land.

I did a number of compositions of this seaweed and patterned sand showing the morning clouds reflected in the wet sand. I like the way in this one that the shape of the seaweed flows into the cloud reflection.

Dunstanburgh Castle is much photographed and for good reason. The classic shot involves the gorgeous round black boulders nearer the castle, but I was looking for something different. I took a strong simple foreground that minimised the castle and waited for the light in perfect silence.

I was stood talking to a real live Viking whilst watching this scene. Whilst I usually like photographing alone, sometimes company is good.

A long shutter speed with an inverted 0.6 ND grad gave the water a smooth look and darkened the water down for this zen like composition.

You are my waterlily,
A small pinprick of beauty in bloom.
